The Ghaswala Vision Foundation is a registered public charitable trust established on June 1, 2002. The foundation supports various activities related to eye care and blindness in general but the main focus of the foundation is to fight corneal blindness.

The words "Eye Donation" have changed its meaning in the past few years. From being a noble cause several years ago, eye donation has lately received many anecdotes viz., processed eyes / corneas for a price tag, vision at a price, etc. The common man who has no vested interest in the process of eye donation but believes in a noble cause has given these anecdotes. When examined carefully, we realize how true they are.

Many years ago, when eyes were donated they were examined using a torch light and corneas were sutured onto the blind recipient in the hope of giving him "sight".

In recent years, with the advances in medical sciences, donated eyeballs undergo a series of tests / analysis which ensure that only "technically healthy" corneas undergo surgery.

While the burden of eyeball collection from the deceased still remains with the eye banks, the cost of eyeball processing, surgery and hospitalization remains with the blind recipient (barring government hospitals) ….and ironically yet remains termed as an
"eye donation" As a matter of fact, the "loudest whisper" amongst social workers and voluntary doctors - "eyes are donated to whom ? …..the surgeon, the eye bank, the hospital or the recipient".

In an attempt to boost the eye donation movement, the Ghaswala Vision Foundation plans to acknowledge the efforts of the surgeon (cover surgeon's fees), the cost of surgical material and the costs of hospitalization and thereby complete the cycle of a "true eye donation".

This novel approach will give the recipient the "true gift of sight", increase collection of eyeballs through motivated social workers and acknowledge the efforts of the surgeon as well as the cost of patient care in a city like Mumbai and later in other parts of the country.

The Ghaswala Vision Foundation also aims to bring about transparency and accountability in eye banking and this can only be done through online eye banking (e-enable). This paperless system will prevent duplication of records, enable timely analysis of data, generate various reports and measure performance in real time so that corrective action can be taken quickly. Online eye banking will also ensure that information can be accessed from anywhere at any time. The system will account for every eyeball collected and thereby ensure fair and equitable distribution of corneas. A simple browser-based software can be hosted on a central web-server which can be accessed locally as well as globally using dial-up or broad-band or high speed internet lines.
